  1. 5 Ceramic Artists to Watch Out For in 2022

The art world is constantly evolving, with new styles and techniques emerging all the time. Take, for instance, ceramic arts, which is currently seeing a resurgence in popularity. More and more artists are choosing to work in this medium, which makes it difficult to keep track of all the new and upcoming talent.

Want to stay ahead of the curve? Then, here are five ceramic artists who, we believe, will make a huge impact in 2022 and the years to come.

    1. Mitch Pilkington

    LARGE WHITE POINTE SCULPTURE

Based in North Devon, England, Mitch Pilkington spent the early 1990s studying Ceramic Design at the Falmouth School of Art and Design. Since then, her work has been exhibited in galleries across the United Kingdom, from Ceramic Art London in Central St. Martins to the New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham.

Using stoneware and porcelain clays, Pilkington creates breathtaking ceramic sculptures inspired by the natural forms she encounters at home and during her travels. Her pieces are hand-formed and constructed intuitively, making them a great addition to any ceramic art collection.

“The rhythmic, meditative, and mindful process of coiling, and the many hours of scraping and sculpting means each piece is an emotional response to the clay, generating an underlying quality to her work, which imbues each piece with a unique sense of calm, serenity, and connection,” says an article published in Contemporary Ceramics. “Mitch’s work is continually evolving in tune with her life and intuition.”

    2. Jongjin Park

    Source: Eclectic Trends

With degrees from Cardiff University in Wales and Kookmin University in South Korea, Jongjin Park is undoubtedly well-educated in ceramic arts. His work is renowned worldwide, having been featured in several prestigious exhibits including the Santorini Biennale of Arts in Greece, Puls Contemporary Ceramics in Belgium, and Ceramic Art London at Central Saint Martins in the United Kingdom.

In his work, Park focuses on showcasing how ceramics can deceive the eye. He experiments with paper and porcelain slip, layering them until he creates millefeuilles that appear delicate and fragile but are actually as sturdy as wood.

“These effects meet with simple shapes and structures, contrasting with porcelain,” he explained. “My practice asks us to think about what is real. At the same time, you experience another deception – ‘how was it made?’ I always enjoy the audience’s reactions to my work.”

    3. Coleton Lunt

    Source: The Potters Cast

A ceramic artist who hovers between pottery and sculpture, Coleton Lunt has mastered both wheel-thrown pottery and ceramic artist. Exhibits of his work are scattered across the United States – at Culture Object in New York, Belger Crane Yard Gallery in Kansas City, and Tandem Gallery in California, to name a few of them.

Lunt uses a broad range of techniques to create phenomenal ceramic sculptures reminiscent of desert landscapes. His work focuses on exploring and engaging with the natural world in the hopes that it drives audiences to think about what it means to be alive.

“I experiment with the two opposing approaches of chaos and control,” he said in an artist statement. “The chaotic approach is personal, wild, and sculptural. My process embraces imaginative ideas and frequently takes large risks. I often build to the point of collapse and these unexpected droops are embraced as they take the sculpture beyond the norm.”

    4.Grégoire Scalabre

    Source: Foundation Rémy Cointreau

Gregoire Scalabre started studying ceramic art at 16 when he joined an apprenticeship at the Atelier du Sage in France, after which he completed theoretical lessons at the Lycée de la Ceramique. He’s best known for his savoir-faire, unique style, and for founding the Arts et Techniques Ceramiques in 2005.

An accomplished ceramic artist, Scalabre’s sculptures constantly take the medium to new heights by blending disparate techniques, shapes, textures, and forms. He’s currently based in Paris, where he spends most of his time experimenting with mineral coating and marble surface processing on ceramics.

“I allow myself the freedom to play with surface effects and to imagine different mediums,” he said in an interview with the art website, Ignant. “I want the viewers to wonder: is it cast iron? Rubber? Stone? Porcelain? You soon realize that when you imagine different materials, you have another way of apprehending the shape and its contours.”

    5. Janene Waudby

    Open Necked Green Vessel

Based in Shieldaig, a remote town on the West Coast of the Scottish Highlands, Janene Waudby is a ceramic artist best known for creating breathtaking vessels that are smoke-fired with sawdust and plants common in her area. Many praise her “softly organic” ceramic sculptures, all of which perfectly encapsulate the colors, depth, and beautiful spontaneity of nature.

The smoke firing method that Waudby uses requires her to stand and watch over the fire, responding to subtle conditions but ultimately letting the blaze speak for itself. As a result, each ceramic sculpture is incredibly unique – born from a collaboration between the artist and the flames.

“My adventures as a sailor all over the world’s oceans have taught me to be secure in change, to observe subtle signs, to trust my intuition, and to accept that I am not completely in charge of the outcome,” she explained on her website. “In the same way that I stand watch on a sailing boat, I stand over the smoke fire, listening, guiding, and watching, but letting the fire have its final say.”

These are just a few of the ceramic artists whose beautiful pieces you should definitely collect. Did we forget to include your favorite ceramic artist in our list? Let us know in the comments section below – we’d love to hear from you!

  2. 5 Ceramics Decoration Methods to Make The Beauty of Texture

Texture is a unique aesthetic expression in the shape arts, usually referring to the texture on the surface of an image or object, which presents variations of vertical and horizontal, high and low, rough and smooth due to different shapes and structures. Such decoration processes include pleats, cracks, engraving, plating, embossing, scraping and pasting, carving, makeup clay, .ect. That is ceramics - the beauty of texture.

Here are 5 ceramics decoration methods to make the beauty of texture.

    / Embossing Decoration Method /

Embossing method: Also known as imprinting, which uses some implements with textured prints, like moulage, string or branches, and other artifacts to make impressions on the undried blank. This decoration technique is one of the earlier methods in ceramic decoration.

    / Scratch Decoration Method /

Scraping method: It uses a comb, saw blade, carving knife, and other tools with a pointed shape to scratch the texture on the semi-dry clay billet so that the blank smooth billet presents a variable contrast of concave and convex.

    /Paste Decoration Method/

Paste method: Pasting pinched or molded ornamental parts onto the body of a vessel with clay paste. The characteristic of paste decoration is that it has a strong relief effect.

/ Carving and Printing Method /

Carving and printing decoration sounds sophisticated. It is similar to stamp carving, an ancient and common decorative technique that does not only on ceramic decoration. It is to scratch, engrave, stack, applique, pick, openwork, and the like processes on the embryo body. We can also imitate this technique, buy some play dough, and then use a knife to carve a shape out.

/ Cosmetic Clay Decoration Method /

Cosmetic clay decoration: Using a white layer of clay covered on the embryo's surface, then carved on the layer. It is somewhat similar to engraving. However, the carving is done directly on the ceramic embryo, while the clay decoration is done on the clay layer. We can also mimic this technique by getting some white play clay, laying it evenly on a table, and carving it with a knife.

Height 28 cm, diameter 16.5 cm, foot diameter 13 cm

The decoration and shape of porcelain mainly reflect the aesthetic orientation of society. The decoration is also a means of artistic processing of porcelain, which can improve the aesthetic appearance of the objects, enhance the taste of appreciation, and make people deeply feel the charm of culture.

  4. 10 Top Designers' Impressive Home Designs for Your Inspiration-Wesley Moon (Part 10)

Design comes from life, and style follows function. Life is multi-faceted, so home also has more possibilities. It switches flexibly between different scenes and closely fits with the lifestyle. This vague and close connection contains a deep emotional transmission.

The soul of design is a lifestyle. Good home design is timeless, still has a comfortable texture and perfect function after years of wear and tear with life, enough to support the full range of needs of our body and soul.

In this blog, we share ten top interior designers' attitudes towards design and art and the way they integrate taste into their spaces. Get inspiration for your home from these homes.

We will devise it into 10 parts. This part focuses on Adam Hunter.

    NO.10

    Wesley Moon

    Apartment in New York, NY

Interior designer Wesley Moon's New York City apartment perfectly reflects his love of classic and exotic mixes. As he says, "History and travel are my design inspirations, so the home has both a classic feel and a modern flair.

The dining room's backdrop is a custom wallpaper Moon created in collaboration with de Gournay, depicting the church of Palermo and the iconic Sicilian flora and fauna, where Moon's parents were married.

The exquisite matte paint glistens against the gold leaf for a rich, exotic look.

The custom-made banquettes at the table are modeled after those Moon saw in Parisian bistros. As for the gilded ceramic antique chandelier, a light bulb can be used, balancing classic charm with modern convenience.

The Art Deco-style turquoise python scale embossed marble fireplace features an artist-deconstructed mosaic collage of Portrait of Elizabeth I, a symbol of iconic classic subversion.

If the gold ceiling mural in the library represents heaven and the floral decorated French carpet symbolizes the earth, the sleeper sofa in the dark blue fabric is as mysterious and enchanting as the ocean.

The gold and sapphire velvet knotted stool echoes the classical paintings on the walls and the 19th-century Louis XVI-style gilded wooden table. The tulip art in the center is like a wild garden blooming in the space.

Bedroom Moon commissioned decorative painter Jane Henry to add dynamic lines in gold paint over an 18th-century tapestry, a dramatic effect that falls between destruction and reinvention.

The home's artwork and antiques of different styles are united by common threads. As Moon says, "I collect all kinds of different aesthetic styles, and as long as they are my favorites, they naturally echo each other in some way."

Family Home in Hollywood Hills, LA. US

Celebrity interior designer Adam Hunter's Los Angeles dwelling is brimming with a cozy and fresh finish atmosphere to enjoy nature and relaxation.

The living room coffee table is surrounded by a white linen sofa, a classic Eames chaise lounge, custom armchairs, and a pair of vintage piers from a Parisian flea market, placed on a McQueen handmade silk rug, making the space soft and inviting.

Huge floor-to-ceiling windows facing Sunset Boulevard offer some of the best nighttime views in Los Angeles.

The kitchen's cantilevered island seems to float in the air, with built-in hidden shelves creating a streamlined space. It is as understated and restrained as the designer himself.

  6. The Best Galleries to Get Your Modern Art Fix

    source: Qintai Art Museum

What makes a great art gallery?

Is it the collection of art on display or the atmosphere inside? Or perhaps it’s the building itself that turns a good modern art museum into a great one?

There are varying opinions on this topic but for us, we believe that the best modern art galleries in the world have all these elements combined. In this article, we’ll highlight some of our favorite ones. Whether you’re an artist yourself or just an art enthusiast, we hope you’ll find inspiration in these amazing spaces!

    Teshima Museum, Teshima Island, Japan

Located in Japan’s Kagawa Prefecture, the Teshima Art Museum is the product of a collaboration between renowned Japanese artist Rei Naito and Tokyo-based architecture Rzue Nishizawa. It opened in 2010, just in time for the Setouchi International Art Festival that was hosted in the country’s Takamatsu Port area.

The open gallery consists of a thick concrete shell with two elliptical openings that are exposed to the elements. Not only does this unique construction allow guests to look at the art, but it also gives them the chance to personally experience it. This provides them with an engaging yet subtle experience, which is perhaps the reason why it attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The Teshima Art Museum houses a single piece of modern art: Bokei by Rei Naito, which translates to “Matrix” in English. It depicts an image of a maternal figure giving birth, which is characterized by water droplets rising and dancing across the floor – a breathtaking sight that you definitely won’t see anywhere else!

Visit the Teshima Art Museum website here

ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, Ishøj, Denmark

One of Denmark’s most popular tourist destinations, the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art is situated near the capital city of Copenhagen and was inaugurated on March 15, 1996. Designed by architecture student Søren Robert Lund, it houses more than 400 pieces of post-war pieces, most of which were made by famous Danish and Scandinavian artists.

The artwork inside may be beautiful but for some visitors, it’s the art gallery’s unique architecture that draws them in. The building portrays a ship stranded a few meters away from the beach, with the café hanging like a lifeboat on the side. Its large panoramic windows overlook Køge Bay, which makes for an otherworldly experience.

Visit the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art website here

    Qintai Art Museum, Wuhan, China

Found by the Moon Lake in Wuhan City’s Hanyang District, the Qintai Art Museum depicts an undulating natural terrain that faces the water. Part of its exhibition space lies underground, making full use of the space and reducing the building’s surface volume. Meanwhile, the side facing the road consists of a vertical facade that highlights its urbanity.

The art gallery is the brainchild of Shanghai-based studio Atelier Deshaus, which had hoped to channel the lakeside’s undulations and topographical flow when it conceptualized the building. On the other hand, the galleries and exhibition spaces exude austerity, thanks to their brutalist-inspired aesthetic that makes use of exposed concrete and strategically-placed crevices.

Apart from modern art pieces, the Qintai Art Museum also features ramped footpaths that link the second-floor café to the rooftop terrace. This one-of-a-kind design element means that the public can still enjoy the art gallery’s space long after it closes, which strengthens its openness and emphasizes the urbanity of its architecture.

    Tate Modern, London, England

A must-visit for any art enthusiast, the Tate Modern is one of the largest museums of contemporary and modern art in the world. It was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in early May 2000 and received more than five million visitors in its first year – proof of how breathtaking the pieces inside are.

This art gallery is filled to the brim with incredible paintings and sculptures from Picasso, Dali, Warhol, and Rothko, just to name a few of them. Their vibrant pieces are perfectly in contrast to the building’s gritty industrial interior. The Tate Modern’s collections – of which there are over 1,500 – are divided into abstract themes, rather than eras, which is a feature that many visitors love.

Visit the Tate Modern website here

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, USA

Founded in 1929, the Museum of Modern Art – or “MoMA,” as it’s most commonly referred to – began with a tiny collection of just eight prints and one drawing. Today, it’s one of the world’s most well-known modern art galleries, with more than 200,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, and even films.

Spanning six levels, the Museum of Modern Art is known for its maze of glass walkways, which allows visitors to view artwork from several different angles. It also features a high-end restaurant and bar, as well as a cinema where curated international films are frequently shown.

The art gallery is known for housing some of the world’s most famous modern art paintings, including The Dream by the Belgian artist, Rene Magritte; Campbell’s Soup Cans by the American pop art artist Andy Warhol; and Les Demoiselles D’Avignon by Pablo Picasso, who pioneered Cubism. Its most well-known artwork is The Starry Night, an 1889 masterpiece by the tragic Dutch artist, Vincent Van Gogh.

    Jeff Andrews

Bachelor Pad in Los Angeles, CA

Interior designer Jeff Andrews' home has been featured in Home Beautiful, a prestigious magazine and a source of inspiration for many interior designers.

Andrews believes that good interior design is built encompassing objects and spaces that bring you joy. It must be a true expression of an inner intention that makes you long to come home.

The study, which opens to the garden and bar, is where Jeff Andrews is most at home, with original pine paneling covering the walls and grasscloth wallpaper on the ceiling to add texture.

Andrews recalls that his grandparents' home had such a room, with its raw, wild charm, as at home and relaxing as a wilderness log cabin.

The study, complete with Andrews' #856 chair for A. Rudin, is covered in soft linen fabric and features an openwork ceramic chandelier that seems to gild the vintage artwork and ceramic vessels.

The bedroom continues the ruggedness with a touch of texture. From the wall hangings to the rug and cushions, black and white tones are used throughout, and the interplay of different styles gives the space a charming appeal.

    Gonzalo Machado and Mafalda Muñoz

    Luxury Apartment in New York

A star designer couple from Madrid, Spain, known for their maverick taste in style, blending art, furniture, and modern inspiration to give spaces a unique and powerful appeal.

They believe there doesn't follow any rules or set trends for a beautiful house. It's usually neutral tones, original textured decorative surfaces, and a perfect blend of antiques, art, and contemporary design from different periods.

Spaces are a mix of warm and traditional antique furniture, as well as avant-garde design and raw textures. There is a magic atmosphere of freedom and indulgence in restraint.

At their country house north of Madrid, in front of the fireplace, a sofa designed by Muñoz's father, Spanish design legend Paco, is paired with a metal coffee table from Casa y Jardin and an aesthetically pleasing mushroom lamp.

In the library, their simple geometric chandelier hangs above the coffee table and sofa bed, while the wooden chairs of Spazapan seem to sculpt the space, echoing the beauty of the original painting on the fireplace.

On the other side of the library, a simple, free-moving shelving system wall unit, filled with collections from years of travel, is the perfect backdrop for sculptural wooden chairs and human stone art.

Danish cabinetry with Miquel Barceló's art hangs next to the uniquely shaped HELGE VESTERGAARD racquet chair in the bedroom. The kitchen complements the rest of the interior.

The bedroom space retains the original walls and exposed wood of the old mansion's two homes, with neutral-colored antique furniture and rustic cotton and linen curtains, giving the area a back-to-basics naturalness and simplicity.

Next to the bed is a nightstand designed by the couple, made of special stone, and topped with a geometric table lamp by CARLA VENOSTA. On the right side is a 17th-century Spanish walnut desk, with a sense of determination and strength in its subdued rusticity.

  10. 10 Top Designers' Impressive Home Designs for Your Inspiration-Spinocchia Freund(Part 5)

This part focuses on Spinocchia Freund.

    NO.05

    Spinocchia Freund

Family Home in Notting Hill Gate, GB London

Interior designer Brigitta Spinocchia Freund's chic and comfortable Notting Hill, London villa is modern and retro in design, filled with a beautiful fancy of time travel.

A large silver pleated screen at the entrance blocks the view, creating privacy while adding surprise to the space at the rear. The reception room furniture is sparsely placed, providing a comfortable space for conversation and reading.

The reception room is hung with gilded chandeliers and flanked by art deco mirrors and paintings by William Turnbull. The coffee table and rug are antique, each piece carefully selected to echo in harmony.

Spinocchia created a three-level lighted atrium and spectacular vertical garden walls to keep the floors light and connected.

A cantilevered spiral staircase, winding in a suspended fashion from the ground floor to the fifth floor, connects the various floors of the villa, with balustrades equipped with hand-stitched leather.

The dining area, with its custom-made comfortable seating, surrounds a transparent Liquid Glacial table designed by architect Zaha, with reclaimed Versailles parquet flooring dating back to the 18th century.

The home's full-height library is dominated by black, draped with greenery and vines. Custom rugs, sofas, and tables echo each other, and decorative cabinets are layered with decorative items from antique markets.

The huge kitchen has a long white island with a series of colorful bar stools commissioned by Richard Woods, adding a splash of color to the neutral space. A brass light fixture of his own design hangs above the island.

On the first floor, an exploding installation by Cuban artist Los Carpinteros hangs above the indoor pool, bringing incredible tension to the space. For Spinocchia: the introduction of art is an integral part of the space's design.

The basement bar, with its flame-print fabric upholstered benches and tasseled velvet seats, was designed by Spinocchia, and the painting on the wall, "Moscow Hotel Room," exudes ambiguity and glamour. The mirrors in the paneling create a soft glow at night, giving the space an enchanting atmosphere.

For Spinocchia, creating visual pleasure and comfort is at the heart of the design. No matter the size of the space, the ideal living condition can be achieved by incorporating the lifestyle into it.
